GAMEPLAY

CHARACTER & CONCEPT PROCESS

Early concepts for Mai and Kula characters.

More fleshed-out concepts of Mai and Kula, finalizing proportions.

Completed concept art, adding colour and personality.

A diagram of Mai’s Cutting Ability. In the game players will encounter large objects which cannot be carried or pushed beyond a boundary. For any large interactive object in the game, Mai’s Cut splits that object into two smaller versions of itself. Both Mai and Kula can carry small objects; allowing a large object to be easily transported in the form of two small objects by both characters.

A diagram of Kula’s Fusing Ability. Players will encounter situations where they need a large object as a counter-weight or as a step-up to the next platform. Kula’s Fuse can combine two small identical objects into one large version of that object. Although slow and heavy, this large object can be pushed around by a character but not lifted.

A diagram of Mai’s Climbing Ability. Mai can climb trees and vines to get to higher places. However if she touches water she will jump back out to the nearest and latest land she was on.

A diagram of Kula’s Swimming Ability. Kula can swim in and under water to get to deeper locations. However if she tries to climb a tree she will fail to do so. This is because she uses mental power rather than physical strength to get around.

Quick concept art of the water forest world of Inspirit. The small islands wrapping close around the trunk of the Tree of Life are where the game levels take place.

Polished concept art of the tutorial level.

Render of 3D Mai and Kula characters for a banner display.

Mai running cycle.

Mai pushing cycle.

Kula swimming cycle.

Kula idle cycle.

Final screen in the game when the players successfully complete all levels and Mai and Kula rejuvenate the world.

OTTAWA CAPITAL GAMING EXPO 2017

The four best projects were selected to appear at Ottawa CGX 2017. Here I am with my teammate Sarah and three other teams as we prepare our booths for the event.
